Chandratal Lake — the 'Moon Lake' — is one of India's most beautiful high-altitude destinations. At ~4,270 m in Lahaul & Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, it draws trekkers, motorcyclists, photographers, and adventure travellers every summer. Here's exactly how to plan your stay.
Distances to Chandratal Lake
• From Batal (Samsara Camps): ~14 km — closest comfortable base
• From Manali: ~125 km via Atal Tunnel and Gramphu
• From Kaza: ~80 km via NH-505 and Losar
• From Kunzum Pass: ~21 km
Why Batal is the Best Base for Chandratal
Batal sits on the Manali–Kaza Road right at the base of Kunzum Pass — the road junction from which the Chandratal spur begins. It's the nearest point with proper accommodation to the lake.
Samsara Camps at Batal offers Swiss canvas tents, hot Himalayan meals (dinner + breakfast), bonfire evenings, stargazing, and guided day tours to Chandratal. At 3,900 m, it's also the ideal altitude to acclimatise before visiting Chandratal at 4,270 m.
