About Samsara Camps, Batal, Spiti Valley

Samsara Camps is a premium Swiss tent camp at Batal, on the Manali–Kaza Road, Lahaul & Spiti, Himachal Pradesh — at 3,900 m (12,800 ft) above sea level, and just 14 km from Chandratal Lake (Moon Lake).

We are the last comfortable stopover before Chandratal on the Manali–Spiti circuit. Whether you are riding in from Manali via Rohtang Pass (~115 km, 5–6 hrs) or coming from Kaza via NH-505 (~65 km, ~2.5 hrs), Batal is where the road converges — and where Samsara Camps is waiting.

Why Batal

Batal is the natural base for Chandratal. Sitting at the confluence of the Chandra River and the Kunzum Pass road, it is the last inhabited point before the lake. Camping directly at Chandratal is increasingly restricted to protect the ecosystem — staying at Samsara Camps gives you comfort and proximity, with a guided day tour to the lake the next morning.

Batal is also the smartest acclimatisation stop. Chandratal sits at 4,300 m (14,100 ft) — rushing there from lower altitudes without a night's rest at Batal's 3,900 m (12,800 ft) is a common cause of altitude sickness. One night at Samsara Camps solves that.

Open June to mid-October, subject to Kunzum Pass road clearance. Mobile network near Batal and Chandratal is extremely limited — book before you leave for Spiti.
